“L.A. is its own beast. It’ll swallow you up.” – Kendra
Moving from south Texas to Los Angeles over two years ago, I had no idea what to expect. Here I was, an 18-year-old overachieving nerd from a small city 10 minutes from Mexico moving 1,600 miles away from home. While living on-campus at ‘SC definitely made the transition smoother, I had a pretty epic culture shock. Literally, the plane ride to L.A. had the most Asians I had ever seen, and I AM half-Asian.
Undoubtedly, I had to learn how to do a lot of things on my own. I had to learn how to cook and wash clothes after the schlock laundry service ruined mine. I had to get a job for the first time. While it took me a while to tame the beast, I’ve grown so much since then. I can now take the freeway without freaking out, go to an interview with confidence, see a celebrity without actin’ a star-struck fool. Now that I am in the second half of undergrad, I really look forward to what the future holds here in this city. PR can be just as cutthroat, but you have to learn that if either of them try to swallow you up, make them choke!
