As someone who almost always has public relations on the mind, I love to find creative campaigns that catch my eye. Today, it was marketing for toys I played with everyday for a good four years but have long since forgotten about: Barbie and Ken. Specifically, the advertising campaign marks Ken’s 50th anniversary and promotes a new Ken doll, “Sweet Talking Ken.” The new website Mattel launched asks visitors to vote on whether Barbie should take Ken back or not. In case you have forgotten or were not in the loop, Barbie and Ken had a tragic 2004 split. This campaign by Mattel incorporates social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as billboards and even a cupcake that Ken dedicated to Barbie available at bakeries in Los Angeles and New York City. You can even follow Ken on Twitter to read his pleas to win Barbie back. Campaigns like these are the reason I am so interested in marketing and public relations. Not only is this fun and creative but it leaves the audience proactively waiting for more. I know I’m not the only one waiting to see what Barbie does!
Have a great weekend!
