Today while doing some pr agency work I came across an interesting article about a new popular trend with packaging. Small companies are now starting to design artsy barcodes!
While some companies feel that this is a way to complete the package design, others are hesitant to mess with them. If the barcode does not scan, it could be problematic for the retailer and in turn hurt the company’s sales.
Some companies who have incorporated vanity-barcodes are: Bear Naked granola (blade of wheat grass growing out of its barcode), Duane Reade (New York skyline), GLK (olives), Nestle’s sparkling juice beverages (bubbles rising from the barcode). A few more of the creative barcodes include a hand mixer, jelly beans, a school bus and even trousers (accompanied with a beer belly).
Now if I saw a product that had such unique barcode I may just have to buy it because it is pure genius! It is something that everyone glances at but never really takes the time to examine.
