Internships are key when it comes to building experience and skills. Internships are vital in the public relations field because they lay a foundation of essential skills and teach you what you need to know before you start handling things on your own.
We pride ourselves at Konnect for our internship program, not only because we love having interns and sharing our expertise with them, but also because we seriously use our internship program as a recruiting tool! In this series, we’ll interview some of our own publicity gurus who started out at Konnect as interns!
First up, the wonderful Christine Kim, an Account Coordinator (recently promoted from PR Assistant! YAY!) in our Baby & Kids division:
1. What was your first impression of Konnect PR?
A lot of women. Oh, and a lot pink.
2. What was your first day as an intern like?
People draw out the first day of an internship to be completely nerve wracking. My first day went by surprisingly smoothly. I met with each one of the team members in my department and got to know what kind of accounts they work as well as connect with them on a more personal level. I not only became more familiar with the work environment, but I also felt a lot more comfortable asking questions and voicing opinions.
3. What was the biggest lesson you learned as an intern that you apply to your new position?
Working in public relations, every day is completely different. There’s about dozens of emails rolling in within the hour and only so many projects your mind can fathom in one week, in which case, focus is key. As an intern, there’s really two things you can do: you can scatter yourself, accomplishing really.. nothing or focus your energy into what is most important that really yields a big result. Focus is so underrated, but if you really commit and invest into one thing it’ll get you far. Don’t do 10 things to the 1st degree, but 1 thing to the 10th degree.
4. What advice do you have for interns who want to make a lasting impression?
You’re not an intern to just assist- you’re there to be an asset. Don’t just do what you’re asked to do. Go above and beyond what is asked for.
5. What’s your favorite thing about Konnect PR?
I love how the team is closely knit. We’re inclusive, not exclusive and we love to collaborate.
