When I first walked into Konnect, I really did not know what to expect. While I had a number of (non PR-related) internships before stepping for the first time into the pink office Konnect is known for, staring fresh in a new environment and new city, was nerve wracking. I was opening the door the unknown, wearing my strong European accent on my sleeve. While it took me a week or two to get used to everything, I very quickly realized Konnect has a very friendly environment which empowers its employees to their best.
I still remember the first few seconds at the office – my first impression? SO MUCH PINK! But you know what? It grows on you. I have never seen this colorful office and it has been great seeing the positive reactions of people who come to the office. They are impressed by how the office looks like. Plus, they get a chance to walk down a PINK carpet.
Most of my first day at the office entailed me figuring out what I am actually supposed to do and what to do to leave a good first impression. I remember I bought a box of chocolate from my home country – I guess it was a success because it disappeared within a couple of minutes.
Most Memorable Experience in the First Year at Konnect
Not long after I started as an intern at Konnect, I had the chance of going to the biggest food trade show in the US. This provided me with insights into our clients’ operations and showed me all the hustle publicists go through while preparing for the event. It was definitely a memorable experience. I felt like Alice in Wonderland the whole weekend.
The Learning Curve
I came from a journalism background, but had a limited idea of the other side of the spectrum. I knew that to do a good job, I needed to observe what others do and how they do it. Every day was a new learning experience – it still is, even after 2 years at company. As an intern, you learn a specific set of skills and you try to perfect them as you progress in your job. The reality is that you have to adapt based on your client – not everyone has the same goals. I initially worked mainly with lifestyle clients, but as I learned more I started doing franchise PR as well. The learning never stops!
First Impression Matters
My tip? Show your team that you want to help them – show them that you are a team player and that when needed you are happy to step in. They will appreciate it!
There are two things I LOVE about Konnect! First, we all work as a team. Even though we each have our own accounts to worry about, if necessary we can help each other and provide a fresh set of eyes. Second, we are all kind of an extended family. We know a lot about each other and our bosses and managers always strive to help us grow and be happy with what we are doing.
