The countdown has begun for 4th of July weekend! I can envision my upcoming vacation– a drink by the pool, BBQ with family and friends, and some time to unwind from work. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and am proud to work at Konnect. However, a long weekend is always appreciated. While most businesses will shutdown for the holiday, as publicists the July 4th holiday weekend can come with some great perks, as well as with some unique challenges. Below are a few tips for navigating the holiday week.
- Plan Ahead. The week before and after a holiday weekend are media ghost towns. People take advantage of the time off and as at a PR agency, your pitches often get immediate responses….with automated “Out of Office” replies. While this may be discouraging or make you even more antsy to be on vacation yourself, this can be an opportunity to rearrange your time. With a bit of a quieter week, which isn’t often in PR, this gives us more time to build media list, delay deliver pitches for after the holiday weekend, and to do administrative work that has been stacking up on your desk.
- Be Prepared. Are you traveling for the holiday weekend? If so, when will you be out of pocket and can your team cover for you in the case of a client crisis or a last minute press opportunity? No one wants to be on a conference call at the airport or answering emails from the beach. However, the reality is that news does not stop. While the news cycle may quiet during the weekend, it’s best to have your bases covered so that you are not scrambling if you do get a client call on vacation.
- Enjoy the Time Off! While publicists are notoriously the worst at taking time off (or rather not doing so), it’s a holiday weekend for a reason! Take time to enjoy a slower paced week and spend extra time sleeping in, traveling, reading a book, watching fireworks, or unwinding however you like!
Happy 4th of July from Konnect!
