Raise your hand if you are GoT fanatic. Konnect Agency definitely is and that’s why spontaneous and very passionate conversations happen every Monday morning, topic being the disasters, betrayals and what!? moments of the most recent episode. At this time, I would like to take a moment to let everyone know that Winter is Coming (pun intended) and that reading further is at your own discretion, since MAJOR spoiler alerts will follow.
The past episode of GoT finally brought together Daenerys and Jon Snow, who at this moment still do not know that they are related. Actually, the only person who knows right now is Bran. Which brings me to the fact that Bran came to Winterfell and reunited with his older sister, Sansa. The insane episode ended with Jaime Lanister neutralizing one of the last standing allies of Daenerys, Olenna Tyrell, who, after swiftly and consciously drinking a poisonous drink revealed that it was her, not Tyrion, who killed Geoffrey.
So, what PR lessons can we learn from this episode ?
ALWAYS KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY INTRODUCE YOUR CLIENT
Your main job as a publicist of a specific brand is to make sure that it is represented correctly. When you are reaching out to your media contacts, you need to make sure you convey the correct messaging and that you portray your client in the best way possible. I work with Cabeau. However, if I just say that, the audience will be guessing what exactly the company does and might not even be interested enough to go on the website to decide whether the brand can fulfill their needs. As such, when pitching this brand, I make sure to inform my contacts that Cabeau is a leader in travel products available in more than 110 countries and that it provides products which will enhance your travel experience, making it more comfortable. Does this make you more intrigued about the product?
KNOWING DOESN’T MEAN SHARING
The Starks had a habit to meet and discuss important things by the huge tree. This happened in the past episode as well, when Sansa and Bran met and he told her he knows everything, even the terrible things that have happened to her over the years. He then goes into details and tells her that he has the ability to see in the past and future, revealing that he even saw everything that happened to her in her awful marriages. She looks terrified when he says that. Translating this into PR, you have to realize that you most certainly know more than a general public about a brand. That does not mean however that you are supposed to share it. Either you can’t or it is information that can only be shared under certain circumstances, at a certain time.
YOU CAN FACE CRISIS WITH A GRACE
I know, easier said than done. The episode ends with Jamie killing Olenna Tyrell, who, despite knowing she will die, remains gracious. What more, she decides to go out with a bang, leaving Jamie with an information that will possibly mix up his relations with his sister and Mad Queen, Cersei. When you are facing crisis, take a lesson from Olenna. Even though she died, she shared an important information which will help Deanerys and Jon. In PR crisis, you should surround yourself with a strong team which will help you stay afloat. Additionally, always have a back-up plan for when things are going sideways. You might be surprised to find out that what seems like a disaster can turn into something positive.
