In preparation for our team training in Los Angeles every individual in our public relations agency was asked to take Gallup’s Clifton StrengthsFinder. As someone who has never taken a strengths assessment before I must admit I was a little skeptical about how answering a few multiple-choice questions could provide insight into what my strengths were. It is safe to say the Strengths Assessment proved me wrong.
Each of the top 5 strengths an individual receives falls into one of four categories: Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building and Strategic Thinking. The description for each of my top 5 strengths and categories highlighted certain personality traits I was already aware of, but also pointed out aspects of my strengths that I can better tap into as a publicist.
However, what I found to be even more beneficial from the assessment was how the strengths assessment has improved working relationships with managers and colleagues. Every person takes on challenges and approaches tasks differently, but knowing what motivates and challenges individuals allows a team to run more efficiently and effectively.
As an agency, we now have a full chart of everyone’s top strengths so when putting together PR Plans we can tap into the Strategic Thinkers and when looking to mentor new interns we can seek out the Relationship Builders.
I’m excited to learn more about my individual strengths, how I can best utilize those strengths as a publicist and how I can continue to better my work relationships. This skeptic highly recommends giving the Strengths Assessment a try in your office!
