In case you were not aware already, today, March 14, is officially Pi Day (not to be confused with Pie Day – January 23rd) which is celebrated worldwide. The cheeky holiday celebrates the Greek letter “π”, better known as “Pi”, representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately 3.14 (AKA March 14). Pi day was established in 1988 by San Francisco’s physicist Larry Shaw to celebrate mathematicians’ favorite Greek letter and the holiday was formally recognized by Congress in 2009. Since then it’s inspired eccentric and pun-filled celebrations everywhere with actual fruit pies to cheesy pizzas and anything circular in between. Here at our Los Angeles Public Relations agency, we encourage the commemoration of Pi Day. See below for a few different ways brands are getting in on the mathematical, light-hearted celebration!
- Pi in the Sky
Our friends at NASA are encouraging math wizzes to compete in their “Take the Pi in the Sky” Challenge by solving a sequence of interplanetary math problems. This allows fans to solve the same sort of problems NASA scientists and engineers do using Pi. What a great ode to the famed Greek letter!
- In Pizza We Crust
In case you kneaded a cheesy way to celebrate, lots of pizza brands got your back this year! For example, our client Hungry Howie’s is offering fans a one-topping medium pizza for $3.14 with the purchase of any regular Howie Bread at regular menu price today in honor of Pi Day. This is such a fun franchise PR promotion. No matter how you slice it, you’ll want in on that deal!
- These Brands Only Have Pies for You
How can you celebrate Pi day without an actual slice of pie!? Luckily there is a multitude of restaurants capitalizing on Pi Day to offer you a heavily discounted slice of yummy pie. Make sure to stop by Coco’s Bakery Restaurant for a $3.14 slice of pie or even Whole Foods who is offering $3.14 off their entire selection of large bakery pies.
- Exploratorium Pi Day Celebration
Knowing that Pi Day was founded by San Francisco’s very own “Prince of Pi” Larry Shaw, they celebrate the never-ending number every year at their local Exploratorium. With Pi-related activities, free slices of pie, fun rituals and antics, we can’t find any reason why fans wouldn’t want to join in on the fun!
- Tau Time with M.I.T Admissions
Looking to get into Massachusetts Institute of Technology this year? Luckily you can celebrate your admissions today! Since 2012, MIT has decided to announce their undergraduate admissions decisions on Pi Day. To take the mathematical celebration even further, they alert lucky college goers at Tau Time (another math Greek letter valued at 6.28), which is 6:28 pm ET. Way to take your Pi Day merriment to the next level!
