Getting Back into the Groove After Vacation
It’s a gorgeous summer day at the beach. You’re getting lots of sun, sand and enjoying time with family and friends. The next thing you know, it’s time to go home and get back to work. Summer is prime vacation time, which can make it difficult to get back into the groove at the office after a week in paradise — and at public relations agencies, the thought of coming back to an overflowing inbox seems daunting.
How can you return after vacation without feeling overwhelmed? We have some tips that will help you stay productive and get you back in the swing of things:
Ease into it
Don’t feel like you need to tackle everything at once: start your day by meeting with your team(s) to get the full download on what happened while you were out. This will quickly get you up to speed on any client asks that your team already handled and those that you need to address. From there, you can better navigate that overflowing inbox with a clear idea of what needs your immediate attention.
Prioritize your tasks
One of our favorite things to do is to make a to-do list. Get your thoughts organized before conquering any tasks, and try to prioritize everything. Put the most important tasks first, particularly those with deadlines coming up. Once you’ve created your to-do list, stick to it and keep your team(s) updated on your progress. Don’t feel discouraged if you aren’t able to complete every task your first day back — the important thing is staying productive when you return, not the number of tasks you were able to finish.
Clean out your inbox
Once you get back to the office, start sifting through your emails. Don’t feel like you need to respond to everything immediately unless it’s urgent. Take your time and catch up on what you missed while you were out. A trip through your inbox is a surefire way to get you motivated to tackle your day. If more pressing tasks need your attention, feel free to move on and conquer your inbox later in the day.
Take a break
Even though you just got back, you still deserve to take a breather. Go for a walk around the block, catch up with a coworker over coffee and actually take a lunch break. You’ll come back to your desk feeling refreshed and ready to conquer your to-do list. Even the busiest publicists know it’s best to take a break once in a while.
Nothing kills productivity quite like dehydration. Air travel is especially dehydrating and can make you feel even groggier the day you return to the office. As soon as you wake up, get yourself a large glass of water and get plenty of that sweet, sweet H20 throughout the day.
So there you have it! Put these tips into practice the next time you’re out of office, and you’ll be amazed by how refreshed you’ll feel.
