As you may have heard, the Kardashians made close to $65 million dollars last year. Yeah. That wasn’t a typo.
The Hollywood Reporter’s cover story Inside Kardashian, Inc. is an exciting glimpse into the life of one of the most lucrative and recognizable new brands in entertainment and its mom-manager matriarch Kris Jenner. She has single handedly taken what could have been a blemish on her family’s reputation and turned it into a multimillion dollar brand.
However you feel about the Kardashians, you can’t argue that these girls (and Rob) work hard. It’s difficult to turn a corner without seeing Kim, Kourtney, or Khloe (The Holy Trinity as I sometimes call them) on the cover of a magazine, on television, or even on Twitter. The Kardashian family has a combined 13 million Twitter followers with Kim topping out at a little over 6 million. Kim was the 4th most Googled person of 2010 after Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Katy Perry. Their reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, produced by the pop culture genius Ryan Seacrest, is currently filming its sixth season. The show is one of the highest rated programs in the history of E! and it is the highest rated Sunday night series among female viewers 18-35 with close to 3.5 million viewers each week. Jenner says of her success, “Who knew it would be this profitable? I should have more kids.” Somehow, I agree with her…
Developing a brand is one of the hardest things for a public relations agency. It is actually the basis of our profession. We start from scratch and develop the details of our client’s image and public perception. It’s especially difficult when you start with a client or product that has already been tarnished in the media, like Kim.
Before you say anything, remember, that the entertainment industry is first and foremost a business. Many celebrities have resorted to becoming multifaceted in an effort to develop a brand around themselves by creating clothing lines, fragrances, and partnering with other companies that will promote their star power and earning potential. The Jenner Kardashian brood has taken the world by storm and they have made more money on their own image than anyone could have imagined.
I say kudos to the Kardashians. I pretty much love them and at our pr agency, we will definietely be keeping up with them!
