As Thanksgiving approaches, a topic that comes up regularly is gratitude. What are you thankful for? When we stop and take a moment, there may be many things we can conjure in our minds, and research has shown that feeling grateful and having a positive mental attitude is good for our productivity, job satisfaction and overall health. With this in mind, I encourage you to take a moment to do the following — because it’s good for you AND it will help you lead a more rewarding professional life.
I have a love/hate relationship with the word ‘busy.’ I enjoy being busy, but I hate the concept that I am so caught up in multi-tasking, being overscheduled and general distraction that I’m not really moving things forward for myself or for our public relations agency. When I’m distracted by busy, I start to feel less grateful for the things that are going well. Most of us could afford to stop, take a moment and think about the things we are grateful for so we can feel more fulfilled. All it has to be is one thing. Take a moment to appreciate your accomplishments, the company you work for, or the people who contribute to your day. Whatever it is, that moment you paused can help you feel less busy, less stressed and more thankful and calm.
- Don’t forget to thank yourself.
Getting in the habit of being appreciative and grateful towards yourself is a simple way to feel good about your work. It could be that you were thinking on your feet in a moment of crisis this week. It could be that you finally completed that task you had been procrastinating on. And, if you haven’t achieved what you set out to do come close of business on Friday, thank yourself for what you did accomplish with your time as the weekend approaches.
- Take a closer look at the very small things or what you may take for granted.
The things you’re thankful for don’t have to be a big deal to anyone else but you. Maybe it’s that you secured the media placement a client really wanted more than anything or made a new media friend who thanked you for giving them the right story idea – the things every public relations practitioner dreams about. Or, maybe you’re appreciative of that great lunch you had today. Perhaps you just like that new tchotchke on your desk. Sometimes the simple things can be a lot to be grateful for because they offer inspiration, help you do your work, or bring a touch of lightness to your days. In the fast-paced world of working at a public relations agency, the small stuff can feel huge.
- Turn a bad thing into a good thing.
Being a PR practitioner can be tough when things don’t go quite as planned. While we make every effort to set up the right public relations, social media or marketing strategy and plan every detail, sometimes there are things beyond our control that throw a wrench into things, i.e. breaking news, unexpected crisis situations or trolls. It’s important to take a moment to look at every situation as an opportunity to learn something new. Take stock of what you’ve gleaned from every trying situation and say “thank you.”
- Make it stick.
Commit to gratitude every day and making it a habit. Do it first thing or last thing at your desk, when you wake up or before sleep, or set a reminder alarm and just take that moment to pause and think. See how it makes you feel, and if it’s a great feeling every day, it will stick.
- Share your gratitude.
If you’re grateful for someone or something, don’t keep it to yourself. Tell them. Share your appreciation. Gratitude is contagious. A culture of gratitude comes from recognizing each other for collaboration, support and inspiration. We see this every day from being part of a fast-paced agency where working together is key to our collective success. Take a moment to send an e-mail or make a quick call to thank someone else, and that will encourage them to do the same for someone else.
So, what am I grateful for? I’m grateful for the smart, driven group of mostly women who make our work at Konnect Agency something I am proud to share with others each and every day. Thank you.
