In a day in age when you can go to the Roosevelt and get served drinks at a “Midget Bar” staffed by little people, Charlie Sheen is most famous for his role as himself and American Idol is on its 10th season (Lord help us all), you would think it really just doesn’t get crazier than this. Cue Lady Gaga and that notion flies out the window. Famous for always topping everyone, including herself, with her next move, Lady Gaga has become one of my fascinations as a publicist. While I do not do personal publicity today, I have worked in the industry in the past and I know how hard it can be when advising big name celebs. Whether they are emotional wrecks, stubborn, or the complete opposite and need you to direct them on EVERYTHING, I feel like Lady Gaga would be an entirely different ball game. I mean what do you say to someone this out there?? Even though I have heard she is one of the most down to earth, nice people on earth (and I believe it) the conversations that go on between her and her publicist must be insane.
Case in point, the new spread she did for i-D Magazine. While it is a perfect publication for her to be in (public relations agency point) and while she accurately showcases herself in the below editorial (public relations agency point), I imagine the conversation leading up to this spread to go somewhat like the following (in case you shouldn’t already be aware, I have made the entire below conversation up):
Gaga: For my new spread I am thinking I want to have a blonde bun and orange bangs
Publicist: Ok sounds cool.
Gaga: I also want to add more pointy prosthetic thingies to my face to show that there is no such thing as typical beauty, and I want to grab my breasts while looking semi-superhero like with a leather cape.
Publicist: Is that it? No egg carts or meat dresses this time?
Gaga: No I’m over that. Next I’m thinking to just wear a trashcan a la Oscar the Grouch.
Publicist: Oh that would be great. I can’t wait for the press backlash on that one and having to explain that you are not modeling yourself as the go-to source for children’s entertainment.
Gaga: Don’t even think about tampering with my creativity. It cannot be contained.
