One of the many perks of being a Konnect PR intern is the phenomenal community fostered as an office. From day one until today, I have always felt very welcomed as a part of the team. As a part of this community, Konnect PR offers some awesome team bonding opportunities! My favorite of these, thus far, is mid-day yoga. During select Mondays of the summer, Konnect invites the team to unwind and center themselves with some lunchtime rooftop yoga. Last Monday, May 18th, we had a first yoga session with our wonderful instructor, Andrea Brook. This was a fantastic time to relax and regroup in preparation for the week ahead. I would not necessarily consider myself an avid “yogi” by any means, but I loved it! This team building yoga session taught me so much about yoga, about relaxation, and as cheesy as it sounds…about seizing the day.
Here are my lessons learned from yoga, Day #1:
- Go outside: We are busy people and often times it is easy to stay cooped up inside at our desks all day. However, going outside during your lunch break refreshes you and gives you a well-deserved break to enjoy the sunshine. Plus, our DTLA rooftop is GORGEOUS.
- Breathe: We often forget how important it is to breathe, in yoga and in life. This session reminded me that in all situations that breathing is key, whether it’s in Downward-Facing Dog or in a stressful work situation. By focusing on breath, you instantly relax.
- Fear and Excitement are one and the same: Our yoga instructor mentioned that fear and anxiety are the same triggers we feel when we are excited. This was a wake-up call for me. It was such an interesting and novel idea to approach fear with an attitude of excitement. However, when this came into practice in our yoga session when we were asked to do headstands…it was easier said than done!!
- Just do it: Doing a headstand….”Who, me?!” No way. But, I can now say that I did it (with assistance, of course….let’s not get crazy now!). With the support of the Konnect PR team cheering everyone on, we were able to do something that seemed so challenging at the time. After this, we were ready to take on anything that our afternoon and week presented!
Two of my fellow co-workers and I have signed a “binding” contract, committing ourselves to attend all yoga sessions this summer. It’s all in fun, but in all honesty this is a commitment that I am happy to make! After some mid-day Monday yoga, we were zen and ready for the rest of our week (feeling just like these emojis!).
