We’ve all had that moment where we look at the clock at work and think “4 pm ALREADY?! Where did the time go?!” Though it’s impossible to avoid the last-minute items that inevitably come up, there are a few strategies you can use to make the most of your workday.
1. Make a To Do List
Making a to do list is the easiest way to ensure that your day does not get hijacked by smaller priority items. Though there are numerous ways to make a list, I find that the best thing to do is to number your items in order of importance. Have a huge presentation due tomorrow? Make sure it’s the first thing on your to do list! Though it sounds like common sense, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had last minute items come up that have derailed my schedule. Doing a presentation at 6 pm the night before it’s due is not the way to go!
2. Limit Distractions
Cell phones are a wonderful thing, but they can really hamper your ability to get great work done. Try to stash your phone in your desk during your work hours so you can stay focused on your tasks. There’s nothing worse than sending an email twice or misspelling a word because your best friend sent a hilarious text that you attempted to read while typing.
3. Give Yourself Some Breaks
Though it might seem counter-intuitive to stop working while at work, scheduling small stretch breaks can really help your overall productivity. Even a five minute break every hour gives you a chance to stretch, exercise and collect your thoughts. We tend to get distracted more easily when we’re tired or burnt out, so these small breaks can eliminate that need to check Buzzfeed for new cat videos.
