Wedding season is upon us, and as I prepare to be the modern-day version of 27 Dresses, I will be tapping into my knowledge as a publicist.
Here are a few day-to-day PR skills that are important for any bridesmaid:
- Working Hard Behind the Scenes
Planning for a new product launch requires hours of research to secure the perfect placement, just like being a bridesmaid means planning bachelorette parties and weighing in on table settings to ensure everything is flawless.
- Crisis Management
If Aunt Suzy is stuck in traffic and the groom’s best man has a few too many drinks before the ceremony it will be the job of the bridesmaid to do damage control. Don’t try to avoid or ignore the problem, address the situation directly and quickly just like you would with a client!
- Maintain Professionalism
Yes, weddings are a time to celebrate and toast to new beginnings, but when you’re part of the wedding party, you’re not only representing yourself but also the bride and groom. As publicists we are taught to always be professional with clients, media and managers as we are also representing our Public relations agency.
Your clients, journalists and PR agency co-workers depend on you, just like the bride will depend on you on her big day and well before. Being dependable is a characteristic that many of us who work in public relations demonstrate on a daily basis.
With all that said, be sure to enjoy the special day and take pride in your role as a bridesmaid just as you take pride in the work you do every day!
